Century Wavemaster vs Wavemaster XXL

Same family, two different products. The XXL is a bigger target on a heavier base at one fixed height — the freestanding bag that behaves most like a hanging one. The Original adjusts from 47 to 68 inches across seven settings, which is what you want when an adult and a teenager share it. Here is the spec-by-spec version, and who should buy which.

The spec table

Specs from Century's own product pages for each bag, checked on 14 October 2026. Century describe the XXL as having over twice the striking area of the Original; neither page publishes the Original's bag dimensions directly, so we have not invented a number for it.

The real difference is the target, not the base

Both bags are built the same way — 18 oz vinyl over high-density foam on a water-filled base — and both bases land in the same range once filled: about 250 lb on the Original, up to 270 lb on the XXL. That 20 lb gap matters less than people expect. Either base rocks under a full-power hook and settles back; neither walks across the room the way a 30 lb-base bag does.

What genuinely separates them is how much bag there is to hit. The XXL gives you 52 inches of 18 inch-wide striking surface, which Century describe as over twice the area of the Original. In practice that changes three things:

  • You stop aiming. On a smaller freestanding target, a hook thrown slightly long slides off the edge. On the XXL there is bag where you throw.
  • Body shots have somewhere to go. A wide surface low down is the difference between working head and body and just working head.
  • Kicks land on bag. If you kick at all, this is the deciding line between the two. A low roundhouse on a short freestanding bag often finds base or air.

And the real cost of the XXL is the fixed height

The XXL is one height: 69 in overall, no adjustment. For a single adult that is correct and simpler. For a household it is a limitation you cannot work around, and it is exactly what the Original solves — seven settings from 47 to 68 in, so the bag can be set at a teenager's head height on Tuesday and an adult's on Wednesday. Our teen glove guide makes the same point about shared kit: equipment sized for the wrong person teaches the wrong technique, because you end up punching upward or downward rather than straight.

A note on where adjustment actually matters: it is about where the top of the bag sits relative to your chin, not about total height. Set a freestanding bag too low and every punch drifts downward; too high and you work the bottom of the bag, which is the most padded part of it and the part that teaches you least.

Noise, floors and neighbors

Both bags put their impact into the floor through the base, which is the one way a freestanding bag is worse than a hanging one in an apartment: the hanging bag loads a ceiling joist, the freestanding bag thumps the floor your downstairs neighbor is looking at. Matting helps and does not solve it. If noise is the binding constraint, the quietest striking target you can own is a double end bag, and bags for an apartment ranks the options with that in mind.

Where BOB fits in this decision

People shopping these two usually also look at BOB, Century's torso-shaped bag on the same style of base. It is a different purpose: BOB teaches where the targets are — jaw, chin, body — and is the right buy if you are learning placement without a partner. It is not the better cardio target, because a cylinder gives you something to hit for twenty minutes without thinking about anatomy. Heavy bag vs BOB is that comparison in full.

If you can drill, read this first

We say this on every freestanding page because it keeps being true: at the money either Wavemaster costs, a hanging bag plus a rated joist mount is the more solid setup, and it takes less floor space. The reasons to choose freestanding are structural — you rent, the ceiling is finished, the roof is a truss — or practical, in that you want to roll the bag out of the way. Work through freestanding vs hanging and how to hang a heavy bag before you spend here, and if the budget rather than the ceiling is the constraint, the best punching bags under $200 covers what the cheaper end buys.

The short version

One adult, full power, any kicking: the XXL. Two or more users at different heights, or a growing teenager: the Original. Neither, if a joist is available. And if the Century price is the problem rather than the choice, the 70 in bag below gets you adult height and a base that stays put for a fraction of it — with the caveat that nobody publishes a spec sheet for it.

Pick 01 · Freestanding bags

Century XXL Wavemaster

Century

The freestanding bag that behaves most like a hanging one: 52 in of 18 in-wide striking surface on a 28 in base that holds up to 270 lb.

Best for
A no-drill setup that still takes full-power punches and kicks

Pros

  • Over twice the striking area of the original Wavemaster — you can hit it anywhere
  • 270 lb base weight is why it walks less than the small freestanding bags
  • Rolls on its grooved base for storage

Cons

  • Fixed height — no adjustment
  • You need a 28 in circle of floor plus room to move around it

Pick 03 · Freestanding bags

FITVEN Freestanding Punching Bag (70 in)

FITVEN

A 70 in bag on a suction-cup base that fills to about 190 lb — the cheapest way to get an adult-height freestanding bag that will not walk across the floor.

Best for
A room where nothing can be drilled and the floor is smooth enough for suction cups

Pros

  • 190 lb of ballast is far more than the water-base bags at this price, so it stays where you put it
  • 70 in is adult height, so head-level punches land on bag rather than air
  • Suction cups add grip on a smooth floor — the usual failure mode of a freestanding bag is sliding, not tipping
  • Boxing gloves are included in the box

Cons

  • Suction cups need a smooth, hard floor — on carpet or rough concrete you are relying on ballast alone
  • An Amazon-native brand, so there is no manufacturer spec sheet to check
  • A freestanding bag always absorbs less than a hanging bag of the same weight

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Wavemaster and the Wavemaster XXL?

Two things. The XXL has a much bigger striking surface — 52 x 18 in, which Century describe as over twice the Original's area — on a 28 in base that fills to about 270 lb. The Original is height-adjustable across seven settings from 47 to 68 in on a base of roughly 250 lb. The XXL is a fixed height.

Is the Wavemaster XXL worth the extra money?

For one adult who hits hard or kicks, yes — the extra striking area is the difference between hitting bag and hitting edge. For a shared household it is often the wrong buy, because you give up the height adjustment that lets two people of different heights use the bag properly.

Which Wavemaster is best for kicking?

The XXL. A low roundhouse needs bag at thigh height and the XXL's 52 in surface gives you that; on a shorter freestanding bag a low kick often finds the base or air.

Should I fill a Wavemaster base with water or sand?

Water if you may ever move it — it drains in minutes. Sand if you want maximum ballast and the bag is staying put. Either way, fill it completely: a partly filled base is the usual reason a freestanding bag tips.

Is a Wavemaster better than a hanging heavy bag?

No, at the same money a hanging bag is the more solid target, because it absorbs into a ceiling joist rather than a base on your floor. Buy freestanding when you cannot drill, when the ceiling is finished, or when the bag has to roll away.
