Rated load vs real load
Every rating here is for the bag hanging still. When a 70 lb bag swings and you stop it with a hook, the mount sees a multiple of that. So: buy a mount rated comfortably above the bag, and understand that the rating is the mount's, not your ceiling's. A 200 lb joist mount on a 2x6 that is also holding up a floor is only as strong as that joist. We cannot tell you what your structure holds; if you are not sure, a stand removes the question — stand vs mount.
Why the swivel matters
A bag on a bare chain twists, the chain kinks, and the twisting works the mount loose. A swivel between the mount and the chain lets the bag turn freely. Everlast's Elite bag and Ringside's Powerhide come with a chain and swivel; Outslayer bags use straps; many mounts include neither. Truss ceilings and drywall
Two cases where none of these is the answer. A roof truss's bottom chord is not designed for a point load in the middle of its span — do not hang from it without an engineer's say-so. A finished drywall ceiling hides the joist; you can find it with a stud finder and mount through the drywall into the joist, but if you cannot confirm what you are hitting, buy a stand. Hardware you will also need
A stud finder. A drill and bits for lag screws or concrete anchors. Lag screws or anchors of the size the mount specifies (many mounts include them; wall mounts into concrete usually do not). A ladder. Twenty minutes. The hanging guide lists it in order.
Mistakes to avoid
- One lag screw into a joist. Use a mount that spreads the load.
- A wall mount into drywall with no plywood and no studs.
- No swivel. The chain will twist and the mount will loosen.
- Hanging from a truss chord, garage door track, or opener bracket.

Can I hang a heavy bag from an I-beam?
