A speed bag is three parts, and they have to match
A working speed bag setup is a bag, a swivel and a platform. Beginners buy the bag, discover the swivel is sold separately, and then discover the platform costs more than everything else combined. Sizing: bigger is slower, and slower is what you want first
Speed bags are sold by their inflated dimensions — 5×8 in, 6×9 in, 7×10 in and up. A bigger bag has more air in it, so it travels further and comes back slower. A small bag rebounds so fast that a beginner cannot get more than two hits in before it goes sideways. The practical rule:
- Never used one: 7×10 in or larger if the platform will take it. Slow and forgiving.
- Standard starting size: 6×9 in. This is what most kits ship and it is a fine default.
- Getting quick: 5×8 in.
- Competition pace: 4×7 in and smaller. Not a beginner purchase.

Mounting height, which people get wrong
Set the platform so the middle of the bag is level with your mouth or chin. Too high and you are punching upward and your shoulders burn out in a round; too low and your rhythm collapses. The swivel is the part that wears out
Every kit here ships with a swivel, and the plastic ones included with entry kits are the first thing you will replace if you use the bag daily. What a speed bag is actually for
Not power and not conditioning, despite how tiring it is. A speed bag trains rhythm, shoulder endurance and keeping your hands up — the same reason gyms still have them. It teaches you nothing about punching hard, which is the heavy bag's job, and nothing about defense, which is the double end bag's. In a home setup it is the third bag to buy, not the first.
Inflation, and the needle warning
Speed bags ship deflated and you inflate them with a needle pump. TITLE put a warning on every bag listing: moisten the needle (petroleum jelly works) before you insert it, or you will tear the inflation valve and the bladder will slowly deflate. That is the single most common way people ruin a new bag. Inflate firm but not rock hard — a slightly softer bag rebounds slower, which is easier to learn on.
