Best Boxing and Conditioning Shorts: Pick the Cut First

Shorts are the one piece of boxing kit nobody needs on day one and everybody replaces by month three — usually after a pair rides up through footwork or comes home twice the weight it left in. This page is organized by cut, because the cut is the whole decision: trunks for boxing, Thai shorts for kicking, training shorts for everything else.

Scores are our editorial judgment from each model's published specs, size charts and manuals, weighted for what a first home setup needs, and published on our calibrated 8.4–9.8 recommendation scale.

The short answer

You do not need any of these to start

Say it before the list, because every page like this one pretends otherwise: a t-shirt you do not mind sweating through and shorts you can pivot in will get you through a first class and the first few months after it. What to bring to your first boxing class puts clothing exactly where it belongs — bring what you own. Wraps, gloves and a mouthguard come first, every time, and the beginner equipment checklist has that order.

What sends people here is the specific moment the clothes start costing them something: shorts that ride up every time you step, a waistband that digs in through a skipping round, or cotton that holds the whole session's sweat. That is a real problem and it is cheap to fix. Nothing below makes you better at boxing.

Three cuts, and which one is yours

CutWhat it looks likeWhat it is forWhere it fails
Boxing trunksLong, loose, high waistband, satin or poly-satinBag work, pad rounds and sparring in a boxing gymFlaps through skipping; no pockets; looks like a costume outside a gym
Muay Thai shortsShort and wide with slit or flared sidesAnything with kicks — the hip needs the roomVery short; no liner; the wrong look for a boxing club
Conditioning / training shorts5–9 in inseam, stretch waistband, sometimes a linerRope rounds, circuits, strength days, and bag work in a garageA tight hem can catch a high kick; pockets catch a rope

For a home setup, the honest answer is usually the third row. Most beginner training at home is rope, shadowboxing, bag rounds and conditioning, which is exactly what a training short is cut for — and a training short is the only one of the three you can also wear to lift in. Buy trunks when you start sparring at a club, and Thai shorts when kicks are part of the week.

What actually matters in a training short

The waistband. It is the part that fails the session. A drawstring alone slides; a wide stretch or no-pinch waistband stays where you set it through footwork and sit-ups. If a short has one feature worth paying for, it is this one.

The inseam. 5 in is a running cut and rides up on a deep stance; 7 in is the safe middle for boxing footwork; 9 in suits taller legs and lifting. Boxing trunks sit outside this scale entirely — they are cut to the knee by design.

The fabric. A woven stretch shell or a lightweight polyester dries and moves; cotton holds sweat and gets heavy, which is the single most common complaint about training in what you already own. Anti-odor finishes are a real feature on a garment that gets worn three times a week, though no finish survives being left in a bag.

The liner. A lined short replaces underwear; an unlined one does not. Neither is better — but a liner is the thing people forget to check, and it is the difference between a short that works for you and one that does not.

How we ranked these

One rubric, published in full on our methodology page: freedom of movement 30%, sweat handling and odor control 25%, durability for repeat sessions 20%, size and fit range 15%, value 10%. Movement leads because a short that restricts a stance is useless at any price, and sweat handling is second because it is the thing people actually notice by round four.

Scores are editorial judgments from each maker's published construction and the live listings cited under every card, on our calibrated 8.4–9.8 recommendation scale. Where a maker publishes no fabric weight or inseam — which is most of this category — we say so on the card rather than estimating it.

Prices, and where these are sold

Four of the five are Amazon listings, and their buttons carry the live Amazon price with the date it was checked. The Ten Thousand short is sold direct by the brand, which publishes no price feed we can read, so its button carries the maker's own list price with the date we read it off their site — a dated quote, not a live number, and never a discount we invented.

Ten Thousand Interval Short (7 in)

Ten Thousand

A training short built for the thing boxing does to clothing: a four-way stretch shell, a no-pinch waistband and laser-cut ventilation, sold lined or unlined in six sizes.

Best for
Replacing the gym shorts that bunch, ride up or soak through on round four

Why it is #1. It is the only short here built around the two things that actually ruin a training short: a waistband that pinches or slides, and a shell that cannot move with a pivot. Ten Thousand publishes both answers — a four-way stretch shell and a no-pinch waistband — plus laser-cut ventilation for rounds in a closed garage, and a 7 in inseam, which is the middle of the useful range for boxing footwork. It comes lined or unlined, so you choose whether it replaces underwear, and it runs XS–XXL in a long colorway list. Good to know: it is premium money for a pair of shorts, and nothing about boxing requires one.

Why we picked it

  • Four-way stretch shell, which is what lets a short follow a pivot instead of fighting it
  • No-pinch waistband — the detail that decides whether a short stays put through footwork drills
  • Laser-cut ventilation rather than a solid panel, for rounds in a hot gym or a closed garage
  • Lined and unlined versions of the same short, so you are not forced into a liner you do not want
  • Six sizes and a published inseam, so you can match it to what you already wear

Pick 02 · Training apparel · REF APP-02

Venum Classic Muay Thai Shorts

Venum

The traditional Thai cut, made in Thailand: a lightweight polyester short with side slits and a wide traditional waistband, so a head kick never finds the end of the fabric.

Best for
Anyone whose training includes kicks

The one to buy if you kick. Thai shorts exist because a round kick asks the hip for more travel than any boxing cut allows, and the side slits are the whole design. Venum makes these in Thailand from a lightweight polyester with the wide traditional waistband that sits high and stays there. If your week includes kicks — pads, bag or class — this is the cut, and it is the one our kickboxing kit page assumes. Good to know: they are short and wide, with no liner and no pockets, which is exactly what they are supposed to be.

Why we picked it

  • Side slits are the point: they let the hip travel through a round kick instead of the short stopping it
  • The wide traditional waistband sits high and stays put without a tight drawstring
  • Lightweight polyester, which dries far faster than the cotton gym shorts most people start in
  • Made in Thailand by a maker whose gloves and shin guards are already in our roundups
  • Sold in a long run of colorways, so there is a plain one

TITLE Boxing Pro Traditional Cut Trunks

TITLE Boxing

Proper boxing trunks in the traditional cut — long, loose and high-waisted, the shape a deep stance and a pivot need, from the brand most club gyms already stock.

Best for
Bag rounds, pad work and sparring in a boxing gym

Proper boxing trunks. The traditional cut is long, loose and high-waisted so a deep stance, a pivot and a step-back never pull on fabric, and it goes over a groin protector without changing size — the detail people discover on their first sparring night. TITLE is a boxing maker, so the cut is the real thing rather than a fashion interpretation of it. Good to know: we could not reach a TITLE spec page for this model, so the cut and sizing on our card come from the live Amazon listing rather than a maker sheet.

Why we picked it

  • The traditional cut clears the knee and the hip, so nothing pulls when you drop into a stance
  • A high waistband sits above the beltline, which is where a boxing short is supposed to sit
  • TITLE is a boxing-equipment maker rather than a fashion label — their trunks already hang in a lot of club gyms
  • Loose enough to go over compression shorts or a groin protector without changing size

Sanabul Essential MMA Shorts

Sanabul

The cheap pair that covers everything: Sanabul's redesigned Essential short drops the hook-and-loop waistband and fly for a stretch-fit waistband and an athletic cut, so it works for bag rounds and for the gym.

Best for
One pair that has to do bag work, conditioning and whatever else

The value pick, and the sensible one pair. Sanabul redesigned the Essential short around the complaints: the hook-and-loop waistband and fly are gone, replaced by a stretch-fit waistband and an athletic form fit. That makes it a short you can do bag rounds, rope and a gym session in without changing, at a price that lets you own two so one is always dry. Sanabul gloves and shin guards already appear in our roundups. Good to know: it is sized by waist inches and the stretch waistband has less give than the old hook-and-loop one, so measure before ordering.

Why we picked it

  • Sanabul states the redesign plainly: no hook-and-loop waistband, no hook-and-loop fly, a stretch-fit waistband instead
  • An athletic rather than baggy cut, which is what keeps a short from riding up in footwork
  • Cheap enough to own two, which matters more than any feature when you train three times a week
  • Sanabul's gloves and shin guards are already picks in our other roundups, so the brand is a known quantity

TITLE Boxing Edge Boxing Trunks 2.0

TITLE Boxing

The cheapest boxing trunk here from a boxing brand: the Edge 2.0 in a plain black, for a first sparring night when you do not want to spend trunk money yet.

Best for
A first pair of trunks, or a spare for the gym bag

The cheapest real trunks. Last on the rubric and still on the page, because a first sparring night does not need $40 trunks and a boxing cut at gym-short money is a genuine thing to want. Plain black, from a boxing brand, with the cut that matters. Good to know: entry-tier fabric and stitching go at the waistband first — if you spar weekly, treat this as a one-season pair rather than a keeper.

Why we picked it

  • Boxing-cut trunks at roughly gym-short money
  • Plain black, which is the one colorway nobody regrets in a club gym
  • From a boxing maker rather than a marketplace brand, so the cut is the real thing
  • Cheap enough to be the spare pair that lives in the bag

Specs from Amazon listing — TITLE Boxing Edge Boxing Trunks 2.0 (boxing cut, sizing; checked 2026-11-06).

Buying guide

Sizing, honestly

Three different systems on one page. Ten Thousand and Sanabul size by waist and run athletic, so measure rather than guessing from the jeans you own. TITLE trunks use alpha sizing (S–XXL) and run loose by design — take your normal size even if you plan to wear a groin protector under them. Venum Thai shorts run small against US sizing in most of the listings we read; the waistband is the fit point, not the leg.

How many pairs

Two, if you train three or more times a week — one in the wash is the whole argument, and it is why the value pick is on this page at all. One good pair plus one cheap pair beats two mid pairs for most people.

Washing them so they last

Cold wash, no fabric softener (it coats the fibers that do the wicking), and air dry. Heat is what kills stretch waistbands and anti-odor finishes, in that order. The same rule that keeps hand wraps usable applies here, and for the same reason.

What we left out

Compression shorts and base layers, which are a different garment with a different job; competition trunks, which are made to a sanctioning body's rules and priced for people whose gym buys them; and the unbranded marketplace shorts with no maker, no published construction and nothing to stand behind them. Every pick above is a currently-sold listing we confirmed while writing this page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to a boxing class?

A t-shirt and shorts or leggings you can move in, and flat shoes. Nothing new is needed — what to bring to your first boxing class is the whole packing list, and clothing is the least of it.

What is the difference between boxing trunks and Muay Thai shorts?

Length and side opening. Boxing trunks are long and loose with a high waistband, cut for a boxing stance. Muay Thai shorts are much shorter with slit or flared sides so a head kick can finish. If you kick, you want the Thai cut; if you box, the trunks.

Can I just wear normal gym shorts?

Yes, and for a first class you should. The two things that make people replace them are a waistband that slides and a cotton fabric that holds sweat. If yours do neither, you do not need anything on this page.

What inseam should I get for boxing?

7 in is the safe middle for footwork: 5 in is a running cut that rides up in a deep stance, and 9 in suits taller legs or lifting. Boxing trunks sit outside that scale — they are cut long to the knee by design.

Lined or unlined?

Lined replaces underwear; unlined is what you want if you wear compression shorts or a groin protector underneath. It is the spec people forget to check before ordering.

Do I need shorts with no pockets?

For rope work, yes — pockets catch a rope and a key in one is a bad afternoon. For bag rounds and conditioning they are harmless. The premium pick here has a zip pocket system designed not to bounce.
