Why a garage changes the pick
In a garage you can usually hang a bag from an exposed joist or a beam, bolt a stand to the slab, or put a freestanding bag on concrete that will not mind the base. That opens up heavier bags and longer bags than a spare room allows. Three garage-specific things to plan for:
- The joist. Most garage ceilings are open 2x6 or 2x8 joists on 16 or 24 in centers, or a truss. A joist mount clamps to one; a truss needs a beam across two or a stand.
